Mansfield Symphony - Youth Strings

The Mansfield Symphony Youth Strings, formerly Junior Strings, was formed in 1992 and is comprised of 65+ students in grades six through ten from 20 schools within the Mansfield area. The Youth Strings experience serves to complement and encourage the musical instruction young people receive in their respective schools.

Youth Strings is under the direction of Conductor Percy Hall who taught orchestra and band at all levels in Mansfield City Schools for 41 years and is currently teaching part-time at Ashland University. He has had over 100 arrangements and compositions published and is a former member of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra.

Rehearsals for Youth Strings are held on Thursday evenings at Malabar Middle School from 6:15 PM to 8 PM. Auditions for new members is held in the spring. For more information on the Youth Strings program, contact Brandon Smith at 419-522-2726 ext. 211.

Mansfield Symphony - Youth Strings - Percy HallAbout Percy Hall

Percy Hall is in his seventh year as conductor of the Youth Strings. He retired in 1993 after 41 years as a school band and orchestra director in Mansfield, Ohio. He was an Adjunct Instructor at Ashland University from 1993 to 2003. He has composed and arranged music for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles, as well as orchestral arrangements for the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra. One hundred eighty of his small ensembles for brass, woodwinds, percussion and strings have been published by Great Works Publishing, Inc. and are included in the newly revised list of OMEA Solo and Ensemble required compositions and are on lists in a number of other states as well. He has arranged many of the pieces performed by the Youth Strings and 32 of them are now published.
